A small workshop in the pink city.

The Rug Origin began as a handful of looms in Jaipur, Rajasthan, a city that has woven, printed and dyed textiles for centuries. We make rugs the way they have always been made here: by hand, from natural fibre, one order at a time.

Where we work

Jaipur sits at the edge of the Thar desert. The light is hard, the colours are loud, and the craft is old. Block printers, dyers and weavers have worked here since the city was founded in 1727. Our looms are part of that long, unhurried line.

01

Natural, always

Jute, wool, hemp and cotton. No polyester, no latex glue, no synthetic blends. Our rugs can go back into the earth at the end of a long life.

02

Made to order

We do not keep a warehouse of rugs nobody asked for. Each one is woven after you order it, in the size and colour you need. Less waste, better fit.

03

Fair hands

The people who weave our rugs are skilled artisans paid properly for skilled work. When you buy from us, that is where the money goes.

The workshop

Looms, light and time.

A flat weave rug is built thread by thread on a horizontal loom. A tufted rug is drawn onto stretched canvas and filled in by hand with a tufting gun, then backed with cotton and sheared smooth. Either way, a six by nine takes days of work, and the weaver's hands are in every inch of it.

When the weaving is done, the rug is washed, dried in the sun, trimmed and checked. Only then is it rolled and sent on its way.
